Our rat race society has produced too much unnecessary stress. Norms are man-made. Life is meant to be fun. There are some who run around to earn breads for the dining table, and eventually found that no one appreciate the breads. Life is ironic. The more you want, the less you get. Eventually, in a blink of an eye, you noticed life is after-all will come to form a circle. You sow, you reap. You want a quality life, you'd better work towards it now.

What I want in my life is simple, I want to wake up every morning knowing everyone around me is happy; and I smell the crispy sunlight in the morning and fragrance rice in the evening. Life, is not about fly or not fly. You can still achieve a lot even if you are not flying.

You just have to work on other alternative strategies.

I have never addicted to any TV drama since I was 18. However, in March this year, I spent more time than my mother watching this TV drama which focused on an old Taiwanese village in the 70s. I used to have an almost waist-length hair, until early March. The harsh winter weather of Japan has completely depleted my hair of moisture, so I cut 1.5 inches off.

Then a month ago, the drought season in Brunei and the running around were too much for me with long hair, so I chopped off another 2 inches. Now, I have a slightly longer than shoulder-length hair. It was uncomfortable at first I must admit, because I couldn't tie them in a bun like I used to. I used to think I am a "care-free" person and won't be bothered about my hair, seems like I was wrong. Every time I look at my old pictures, I begin to miss my longer hairstyle. This is probably one of the millionth time that I am thinking so "womanly" hahaha ...

Anyway, by Christmas, I will be Rapunzel again :-)

2010 - A New Beginning

Wow! I haven't blogged for a long, long, long time. This is probably the longest time that I have been away from my blog since I first blogged ;-)

So, what are the updates?

To begin with, (1) I've maintained my weight, instead of ballooned further;
(2) My hair is longer, and I am growing out my fringe;
(3) I haven't added anything new to my wardrobe and shoes compartments for so long that I have almost forgotten the joy of clothes- and shoes-shopping;
(4) I used to keep thinking that I was old until I saw an adidas poster of Sophie at 45 years old. Geez, high time for me to re-claim the old me.

I mustn't regress!

"I am Too positive to be doubtful; Too optimistic to be fearful, and Too determined to be defeated."

(5) I have learnt to accept that imperfectionism is another type of beauty. Not everyone knows how to appreciate this beauty.
(6) I have learnt that "Embrace those who love you & whom you love, and rid yourself of those who will only bring you down.
(7) I have learnt that "Never tell your propblems to anyone ... 20% don't care and the other 80% are glad you have them."

"God grant me the Serenity to accept the things that I cannot change, Courage to change the things that I can, and Wisdom to know the difference."

Most important of all, I have learnt that nothing is more important than your family and your health.

Last, but not least, I used to condition my mind to think that, "Once you have missed the boat, you missed the boat." (8) Well, I have taken the time to think, reflect and re-discover recently that: One boat goes, another will come. Important is, you must reflect on (a) how to capitalize on your Strengths, (b) how to work on your Weaknesses, (c) how to tap on those Opportunities, and (d) how to turn your Threats around.

I was unwell the past two days. Since I am gradually recovering from my flu today, my family and I have decided to visit the nearby beach to get some fresh air. And, it's also the first time for Baby K to visit the beach. He's very excited and mumbled many baby words to us. On way home, out of our expectation, Baby K had a deep sigh in the car as if to comment that the beach trip was too brief. We all laughed at his cute gesture :-D

On many occasions, I heard the song "Fly me to the moon" and saw me flying above the Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster in my dreams. Were they dreams, or signs? I still could recall vividly that I flew with an umbrella in the night sky. The wind was not chilly, and it had a sweet aroma. The moon was round and huge. Don't I sound like the mysterious and acerbic magical nanny, Mary Poppins? - Except that I wasn't blown by the East Wind to Number Seventeen Cherry Tree Lane into the Banks' household. Like the Apple Magic Mouse, the umbrella knew exactly where I was heading. I believe I can fly ... like Mary Poppins.

The Winter Solstice Festival is one of the most important festivals celebrated by the Chinese community (including overseas Chinese). It is usually held on or around December 22 every year when sunshine is weakest and daylight shortest. Traditionally, the Winter Solstice Festival is also a time for the family to get together. One common activity for this festival is the eating of "Tangyuan balls" (湯圓) - balls of glutinuous rice, which symbolize Reunion. The Unusual Male-Female Relationship Comedy

My brother recommended me to watch "All About Steve". I must say it's an unusual comedy; it focuses more on human relationship rather than just male-female relationship. The story is about Mary Horowitz (played by Sandra Bullock), an eccentric crossword puzzle constructor, convinced that her blind date the CCN cameraman Steve (played by Bradley Cooper) is her true love. She trailed him as he travelled all over the country, hoping to convince him that they belong together. Bradley Cooper should be a charismatic male lead, but he wasn't given very much role to play with. I am ok with that since I don't really like him.

A Message?

A moth flew into our living room, and stayed in there for more than 24 hours yesterday evening. My parents believe that moth carries the soul of our ancestors who come visit their descendants especially on birthdays or festive seasons. So, we didn't chase it away. The moth seemed to enjoy the atmosphere and stayed quietly at the corner without disturbing us. Pardon me for the occasional superstition, could it be carrying my grandma's soul?

The most enjoyable part of eating Korean food is, you don't waste the leftovers. Throwing in the entree, leftover gravy to a fresh bowl of rice will give you a different tasty flavour. Bibimbap (stone pot mixed rice) and Sundubu-Jjigae (bean curd stew) are my two-MUST orders whenever I visit a Korean restaurant.

Hello, my name is Snowberry. I was adopted by my Mommy Pancake Queen on 2nd August 2009. Basically, I travel with her everywhere since then. Our recent trip was to ChangChun in China, which is a town where the average winter temperature is -18 degrees celcius. I really enjoyed the trip and the snow - look at those snow behind me in this picture.

For this trip, we almost couldn't catch the connecting flight because of the 5 hours flight delay at ChangChun (heavy snow). Basically, we were running and rushing without pause, and along the way there were road block, entrance area closed and skytrain temporary out of service. But still, with determination, we have managed to reach the specified Gate on time. Phewww ...

How times flies. My nephew Baby K turns 2 today. Recalled how anxious we were outside labour room two years ago. His K1 birthday theme was Mickey Mouse when he was 1 yo. This year, Baby K chose the theme of his birthday cake, and he chose Thomas the Tank Engine.

It's fun and educational to have a child around at home. Going from zilch knowledge on babysitting, I can declare myself as expert now from child-proof our house to what's the latest and best dust-free baby powder around :)

Real Vs Fake

I tried a pair of The Face Shop fake (aka false) eyelashes last week. Unsure how those models and celebrities could stand those fake stuff. For 3/4 of the event I attended, I felt 1/3 of my vision was blocked. To start with, I have long eyelashes, and the one that I have chosen was too long for the shape of my eyes. Overall, I must give 100% praise for The Face Shop fake eyelashes glue, it holds very well - I didn't have any worry that the fake stuff will drop in my mushroom soup ;-)

Confessions Of An Almost-Shopaholic

Warning: This posting may sound girly like how you watch a chick flick. Another side of Pancakeism! Hahaha ...

I haven't really shopped for a while, to the extent I almost forgot the joy to see so many different shades of lip balms available , and so many different functions of BB cream from different brands, etc.

I am not so much of a shopaholic these days to begin with. Somedays when I get really busy, it will just be sun block, eye liner and perfumes, voila.

Yesterday I bought herbal cleansing wipes and dual lip care from The Face shop. I used to be a big fan of facial cleansing wipes, but for yesterday I was just attracted by it's light sweet scent. The dual lip care is good: exfoliator and tinted lip balm. As I don't wear lipstick these days, tinted lip balm is essential to maintain moisture on my lips and add colour to my face.

I also bought a charity hand cream (light texture, highly recommended and limited edition), and flawless skin-perfecting foundation (this is a perfect medium coverage for lazy women like myself who wants only sun protection and concealer) from The Body Shop. If you feel good, you will look good.

The Sunlight

I usually dream a lot in my sleep. Last night I had this similar strange dream again, about me searching for "early sunlight streaming through my kitchen window on a Sunday morning".

I typed in the keyword immediately when I woke up this morning, and had more than thousand of sunlight images appeared on my screen - but those images were not what I am searching for in my dreams and in reality.

This ray of sunlight that I am searching has appeared many times in my dreams, to the extent I can even feel it's density - the weight of beautiful sunlight shining on my forehead, the sweet smell of morning sunlight and the quiet sound of Sunday morning.

Either I am an odd one, or everyone has the same dream every now and then.

No matter how, I will keep on searching - searching for that 'right' feeling of sunlight.

This links me to think about Dan Brown's latest book "The Lost Symbol" that I read three weeks ago. May be that sunlight is within our heart, and up to each individual to define it.

It's my habit. I love to read a few books at the same time. Currently, I am reading Seth Godin's Tribe, Ken Watanabe's Problem Solving 101 and John C. Maxwell's How Successful People Think.

I've just finished reading Problem Solving 101, given it a 6.5/10 because I have learnt about critical thinking skills before my reading. The easy-reading and interesting illustrations made it a page turner!

Ken Watanabe originally wrote Problem Solving 101 for Japanese school children. His goal was to help shift the focus in Japanese education from memorization to critical thinking, by adapting some of the techniques he had learned as an elite McKinsey consultant.

He was amazed to discover that adults were thirst for his fun and easy guide to problem solving and decision making. The book became a surprise Japanese bestseller, with more than 370,000 in print after six months. Now American businesspeople uses it to master some powerful skills.

Watanabe uses sample scenarios to illustrate his techniques, which include logic trees and matrixes. A rock band figures out how to drive up concert attendance. An aspiring animator budgets for a new computer purchase. Students decide which high school they will attend.

If you recalled my earlier postings, you would notice I have written on similar post previously. Since completion of my first degree, I have always wanted to write Children's books such as "The Legend Spookley, the Square Pumpkin" - educational and edutainment for children. Away from the two boxes, television and computer.

I thought of reading to children in bookshops and libraries, donating books to children in disadvantaged families, helping them to develop their creativity and communication skills besides improving the language itself.

Then you will question, why haven't I come up with my children's books. In fact, my academic book came first.

Not the procrastination. I have lost count. I must have written more than thousands of opening lines, but never quite managed to finish the first chapter before I chucked the whole theme away. Even though writing may not be difficult for me, illustration is a challenging task. In my views, no children's book is complete without proper illustration.

Perhaps, in my revised resolution list, I should consider picking up my creative pen again!

An edible model of London's skyline has been recreated using fruits and vegetables.

The project, which was commissioned by the Good Food Channel and photographed by Carl Warner, features 26 different types of produce.

The Houses Of Parliament have been made from asparagus, beans and baby sweetcorn; while Big Ben's face was modelled with slices of lemon. The London Eye had green beans as spokes and its pods carefully crafted out of baby plum tomatoes, and the Gherkin building was made from two types of melon and embedded with green beans.

St Paul's Cathedral was made from roundels of carrot, yellow and green courgette and baby leeks, and the dome was made out of a melon and baby sweetcorn. The Tower Bridge was crafted from pineapple, celery and shredded wheat.

Good Food Channel head Roopa Gulati said: "This is a stunning image which has quite literally transformed the London skyline through good food, proving that fun with food in a creative and light-hearted way is the way forward."

First of all, I am feeling much better today. Sorry for the pessimism tone in my postings last week. They were unavoidable, because deep down I had too much that I wanted to say.

If I were to say it, would everyone want to listen without judging that I may be creating a Mount Everest out of a molehill.

Anyway, revert to the first sentence, every now and then, we need to "empty all stale water in the glass". Last week was probably one of those moments for me. I need to reflect, think and re-think, and focus on paths I need to take in the next chapter of my life. Also, most important of all, to correct my mistakes (there are many), and to build on my strength (if any, hahaha).

I am also glad that I am no more frustuated with little things in life. Either I am getting fatter and able to absord and digest negativism faster. Or simply, I am able to process information quicker, and chuck all not-required information faster.

Like truth, belief, values, and appreciation, all these so-called things in general, are essential in our life as a holistic person. However, it's not easy to describe them. Most are in abstract forms. But I can't deny they are there, just like how we can't explain why a person get more empowered after stumbling upon a phrase or advert slogan that changes his perspectives after that.

In this world, there are many who may want to put you down. If you believe you are stronger than them, you won't be defeated easily.

Probably a year ago around the same time, I was having the same bad mood as I am in these few days. I have this strange feeling that this bad mood will last for several days. All will be cleared by next Monday. Keep fingers crossed, will update you if my intuition is right.

To update, currently I am in a terribly lousy mood and, a chatty mood too.

Progress of Our Family House

I am building a house. Everyone will tell building a house is a tedious process, from paper work, inspections to discussions with architect and contractor. I totally agree, especially if you have a full time work to juggle. For my case, I am luckier. I am grateful to my parents who help me with chasing people and, most important of all, the inspection work. The first picture showed Day 1 of the construction which nothing was built yet. It was still an empty land. But it's all worthwhile when you see there are progress every day, and walls started to take shape three weeks ago (refer second picture).

Either I Am In Bad Mood Or She Is Ungrateful!

I haven't experienced such bad mood in many years. Either I have a high EQ (many friends seem to think I have an exceptionally high EQ, I can rationalize myself to smile at the person whom I knew just back-stabbed me). Is it bad to have such high EQ?

Yes. I have been thinking about this question for many years. I recalled 11 months ago I reflected on this question again. Due to my high EQ, a friend took advantage of my kindness and friendliness. She got the credit she was after. I had to start everything from scratch. Stupid, but don't worry, I have learnt - the stupid way.

In the past 10-11 months, I have come to notice if I didn't stress on my assertiveness, my friendliness will be taken on a wrong free ride and people simply either don't take me too seriously or simply feel I am one of those that can easily be bullied. And no retaliation.

I believe I will have an aura of pink ring above my head and I will go to heaven.

For people who appreciate my good qualities, I am an angel. But this is a minority group - at least in my views today.

For mediocre people who don't appreciate good qualities, I am a fool. This can be a majority group - at least in my views today.

For those who just come to know me, I am not stupid nor do I having such even temper. I just choose not to reveal too much of my so -called negative traits. Life's short, Stay positive. I have heard of such advice many, many, many times. But why when it comes to them, they don't practise and apply such good virtue. And, why are people expecting me to stay positive all the time, 24/7 for 365 days for so many years!

These two days, I have been running up and down like a headless chicken to help a new lady in town. She called me 5 minutes ago: You suppose to do this!

Do you happen to notice these days parents are giving their children a longer name? Is this the trend?

When I was in secondary school, most classmates were either Maria, Nancy or Steven or John. Even Stephen were considered as too difficult and unconventional!

These days, I've friends who name their children interestingly long names such as the classic: Annabelle-Sophie-Anderson-Lim-Su Ann. The chic: Shiloh-Jolie May Szer Tan. The lazy pretends to be creative: Tahiti, Courage, or Rain. The list can go on and on and on. I've also heard of a friend who couldn't find a suitable name, so he added his granny's first name to his wife's first name and then add his mother's middle name to give his daughter name. Thank God multiplication was not incorporated!

I love to give names since young. In fact, my sister and I chose our nephew's name. Baby K's name is easy to write, and easier to remember.

I thank my parents for giving me and my younger siblings a simple name. Mine is an elegant swallow (bird). I love to spread my wings and to protect all those whom I love, and I can't breathe without freedom. Important is, I love my name sweet, simple and meaningful.

The next time you want to name your child, think of how s/he will feel when someone calls her/his name, instead of giving a name purely out of your curiosity. Certainly a child with all the 26 alphabets in her/his name is going to catch plenty of unnecessary attention in class.

Baechu Kimchi

Kimchi (Korean cabbage pickle) preparation was one of the highlights of our Korean Language & Culture Week this year. We had a fun time yesterday learning about there are about 200 different types of kimchi exists today. Baechu Kimchi is one of the most common types of kimchi for the autumn. It is prepared by inserting blended stuffing materials, called "sok" (vegetable stuffings) between layers of salted leaves of uncut, whole Chinese cabbage (also called Napa cabbage). The ingredients of the "sok" can vary, pending on the weather conditions. Generally, Baechu Kimchi has a strong salty flavor with the addition of "aekjeot" (fish sauce). However, low-sodium kimchi is preferable nowadays especially for those that prepared at home.

One will have 3G integrated, the other just WiFi, but both will be media- and internet-centric. Apple apparently envisage that iPads not only continuing to offer their existing media, gaming, applications and browser functionality, but also taking bites out of e-book and e-magazine markets.

What it won’t do, though, is take on netbooks, with the iPad being described as a “light communication device” and “iPhone OS media player”. It is 80 percent likely to reach the market before January 19th 2010, with a release in May or June 2010.
